AC Maintenance Tips for a Cool, Trouble-Free Summer

Your air conditioning unit works hardest during summer — which means problems tend to appear on the hottest day of the year. Preventive maintenance in spring keeps you comfortable and avoids expensive emergency calls.
Clean or Replace Filters Every Month
A clogged filter forces the compressor to work harder, increasing energy consumption by 5–15%. Check your filter monthly and clean or swap it when it looks grey or dusty.
Clear the Outdoor Unit
Leaves, dust, and cobwebs reduce airflow around the condenser coil. Keep at least 50 cm of clearance on all sides and gently hose down the fins at the start of summer.
Check the Refrigerant Level
If your AC blows warm air or the copper pipe frosts up, it may be low on refrigerant. This is not a DIY job — a certified technician must detect and seal any leaks before refilling.
Inspect the Drain Line
A blocked condensate drain causes water to back up and drip inside your home. Pour a cup of diluted bleach down the drain at the start of each cooling season.
Listen for Unusual Sounds
Grinding, squealing, or clicking noises indicate a failing fan motor, loose belt, or electrical relay issue. Turn off the unit and call a technician before minor problems become major ones.
Schedule a Professional Tune-Up
Even if everything seems fine, an annual professional service checks electrical connections, coil condition, and refrigerant pressure — catching issues before you feel them.
